POLYSTYRENE (PS)

Polystyrene was discovered by German apothecary and chemist Eduard Simon in 1839. Simon isolated a substance from natural resin, initially thinking it was a new resin itself. However, it was later identified as a polymer and named “styrol oxide” by another German chemist, Hermann Staudinger, in the 1920s. The material was eventually commercialised by BASF in the 1930s under the name “Styrolux.”
